New Jeff Hartford zine!!!!

by |

“The Backbone Of Night” is available online at Chipsylvania

Jeff’s been making zines for years, and each new one is amazing! uh, this is no exception, in that it is exceptional. Jeff’s zines are so good because they seem like “art books” but there are enough “zine cues” to underline that this is not some pretentious mark that someone is trying to make upon the Earth, it’s just the next thing from Jeff. Oh, and we also have I think 1 more copy of Jazz Tobacco, which is mega good.

Jeff is AKA Noise Nomads. here’s video of a 2009 performance (shot by ZEBU):

and here’s a song that one of his fans wrote about him:

play both videos at the same time?

Blog is here.

GRAVEYARD DUCKS

by |

ok, Mickey Zacchilli posted the first installment of Graveyard Ducks online, “for promotional purposes”. Graveyard Ducks is the exclusive comic Mickey draws for Mothers News, and further installments WILL NOT be on the internet! it is STRONGLY recommended that you subscribe… did we mention already that there’s other exclusive comics by CF, Brian Chippendale, Charlotte DeSedouy, Chuck Forsman, Melissa Mendes, Matthew Thurber, Mike Taylor, Jackie H Curtiss, and Katrina Clark?

OLANE

by |

every issue of Mothers News has a word jumble illustrated by the wonderful James McShane, and written by Ambrose Bierce. OK, it’s more true that it’s based on writings by Ambrose Bierce, from Devil’s Dictionary.

anyway, we distribute the papers far and wide, including to an afterschool program here in Providence called New Urban Arts. One of the staff there overheard a kid using the word “OLANE” in conversation, to mean “in bad company”, neither realizing that it was an unsolved puzzle, nor a jokey answer. when questioned on it, he said “damn, don’t you read Mothers News?”.

SAK Y PAK

by |

PAK & SAKIKO @ R.K. Projects / Ospreys from RK Projects on Vimeo.

video from the Pak / Sakiko Mori collab that took place at Tom Bubul’s show at RK projects last spring.

Tom’s show was only up for a week, but every night had some sort of event, usually with pizza and beer.

Prints from the show, in the form of the final installment of Tom’s zine “Ospreys”, are available at Chipsylvania here. Tommy’s got a new zine out too, a “shitty drawing zine” called “Zola’s”, which he is being super cocky about in a real funny way. here’s the regular information:

ZOLA’S is my new monthly drawing zine. It is meant to be conversational and documentary above all else.

The constraints are:
- Must be produced in one day from drawings made in the previous month
- Must be produced monthly
- Must be at least 12 pages in A5 format

For the time being this project will not be documented online.

and here’s the cocky shit:

you fucks, I have seen all of your dirt-style drawing zines, you have no idea what you’re doing, you have no idea what a dirt-style drawing zine even is

ospreys is over, no more unmailable formats that come out twice a year, no more wackado print processes

just the real shit = a bunch of drawings from off of the floor of my room, and whatever else I want to put in there, inkjetted the fuck onto some 8.5×11 pages that get folded in half and stapled every month of the year

it’s not a compilation, it’s not a jam, it’s not for fun – it’s because you fucks are not pulling weight, and somebody has got to show your asses

I know what you’re asking- is it good? Haha, no? I mean, “whatever”?! It’s a bunch of shitty drawings! Also the drawings are cameraphoned and then edited together on the computer, and printed in barely color, like, black lines have weird blue edges and slight digital artifacts. It’s an interesting voice in the conversation? Zola’s is available here. upcoming from dude is a Jandek fanzine, here’s a tease:

Tom’s tumblr is here.

MONSTER

by |

I just added some new stuff to Chipsylvania, check out the recent items. Especially “Monster”, pictured above, which is a fucking massive 88 page beast, edited by Paul Lyons, with a crazy cast of players…

Monster is not a standalone book, but a semi-regular unnumbered Halloween magazine published out of Rhode Island around Halloweentime. I think it’s sold out everywhere online except Chipsylvania? So get it while you can!

The Body

by |

NPR has a nice write-up about a recent batch of shows that our friends The Body played with The Assembly Of Light Choir, including an interview with Chip King, who is 1/2 of The Body. Chip is the namesake of our mercantile website “Chipsylvania“, and as per our agreement, every month gets a free personal ad in Mothers News. Here’s one from a few months ago:

and here’s an ad we made for the band when the record came out:

in conclusion, The Body is the best band.
